For the Liberaltarians Out There

Here's an interesting blog: Bleeding Heart Libertarians. It's a new blog that seeks to bridge the gap between left-wing social democrats (aka "US liberals") and libertarians (aka "classical liberals.") It's really pretty interesting, and they bring up some fascinating questions. It's not like a lot of blogs where everyone is spouting retarded filth ("OOOH! TOSE EVAL COKE BROS!" or some crap like that), the dialogue and conversation is actually quite intelligent. Of course, I'm gathering that within a year or so it will finally degrade, much as talk_politics and so many other places did, but for now it's good.

I'm attracted to it because, being an atheist and having a number of LGBT friends and being against violence, I guess I'm somewhat "left-wing" culturally. When I began to seriously investigate libertarianism and learn about it, I was uncomfortable with it being attached to the political right at the hip, what with its love of war, strong-armed police, enforcing a particular set of social norms, religious conservatism, et cetera. I tried to argue that libertarians should ignore the right and instead focus on the disgruntled, disaffected young college liberals (social democrats) and show them how real libertarianism works, not the "vulgar libertarianism" that purportedly supports big business and is on everywhere. Unfortunately, this idea didn't get any traction (though maybe I should have argued for it beyond just the LJ libertarianism community.) What with the paradigm that supports modern American liberalism collapsing, though--Keynesian economics are failing, people are waking up to the fact that the welfare system hasn't worked, public sector unions are being rolled back, again et cetera--we might be able to convert a large number of them, but only if we try. And try soon.

Anyways, just thought you may be interested.

I'm sorry to hear that you've become so disillusioned with TP, and maybe the place isnt libertarian enough for you (but then come to think of it, its doesnt appear to be liberal enough for liberals or conservative enough for conservatives (and that may be the trick really); so there'll always be someone to rant about what it has "become" - while it may've never "moved" anywhere since its inception in fact). Perhaps the reason for your disillusionment could be more within yourself, which would make more sense, as i've sensed you've become more detached from LJ in general (for reasons outside of LJ perhaps), and probably more insular in your libertarian preferences, but that's not anyone else's issue but yours, so i'm going to stop there.

Look, all I was saying about TP was that it was originally a good place to actually debate about political topics, there were genuinely intelligent conversations, but as it grew bigger it succumbed to Eternal September like everything else does.

And I guess, if we dig deeper, it is partially with me: I'm honestly sick to death of debating politics online. Nobody there has any fucking clue what is going on in the world. None. And I don't have time to educate people whose heads are so firmly stuck in the sand you'd need a backhoe to get them out. Not again.

(Oh, and libertarianism is where I get my libertarian fix; talk_politics was where I got actual debate between competing philosophies. I never really wanted the latter to be the former.)
